Local Regional News November 17

The Department of Natural Resources says license sales are up ahead of the annual gun deer season. DNR wildlife management director Eric Loebner says the department is recommending against taking long trips to hunting camp this season.  So far license sales are up about 9 percent, and there are plenty of deer tags to go around in most parts of the state.

The Durand City Council will be finalizing the city budget for 2021 this Wednesday. Durand Mayor Patrick Milliren says it appears the city will be paying less than expected for health insurance. The council will meet Wednesday night at 6:30 at Durand City Hall.

The Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded a $200,000 grant for Chippewa, Barron, Rusk and Washburn Counties to combat opioid abuse. The L.E Phillips Treatment Center in Chippewa Falls will used the money to operate the Northwest Wisconsin Heroin Opioid Prevention Education Consortium in the 4 counties.

Wisconsin hospitals say they are encountering challenges when they try to transfer patients to the Alternate Care Facility at the state fairgrounds in West Allis.  The temporary hospital has room for 500 patients, but it is treating only 19.  The A-C-F was set up to help overloaded hospitals – and they are overloaded right now.  In some cases, patients haven’t consented to the move.  Recent changes have been made so the facility can accept a broader range of patients.  It is intended to serve patients who are recovering, but not ready to return home yet.

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Durand Area Food Pantry will be closed November 26th and instead will be open on Monday from 9-Noon. The Pantry will also be open on Wednesday, November 25 also from 9-Noon. If you have any questions you are to contact the Durand Food Pantry.

The price has gone up for a recount of Wisconsin’s votes – way up.  If the Trump campaign wants the state’s votes to be counted all over again it will have to pay seven-point-nine-million dollars.  Four years ago, when Green Party candidate Jill Stein wanted a recount, the cost was two-million.  The president has to decide by Wednesday.  That would mean the recount would start Thursday and be wrapped up by December 1st.  The Wisconsin Elections Commission says the cost quadrupled over the last four years mostly due to the pandemic.

Wisconsin is joining a 12-state effort to reduce stress and the risk of suicide among farmers. The Farm Center office with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will do things like creating farmer focus groups, develop mental health provider training, and back other efforts that focus on mental health for farmers. Farm Center Director Jayne Krull says her office has been getting more and more calls from farmers in distress. She calls it a growing need. Wisconsin will get 400-thousand dollars of the seven-point-two-million-dollar federal grant from the U-S-D-A. Falling crop prices, a tariff dispute with China and an uncertain market for farm products have created hardships for farmers over the last five year

A federal lawsuit filed to stop certification of votes in three Wisconsin counties is officially dropped. Three voters from Northeast Wisconsin dropped the suit in federal court in Green Bay this morning. The action was dismissed voluntarily and without prejudice against all the defendants who included county clerks, the Wisconsin Elections Commission and Governor Tony Evers. The lawsuit sought to stop certification of votes in Milwaukee, Dane and Menominee counties.

The current emergency order issued by Governor Tony Evers runs out Friday, but it’s not clear if the Wisconsin Supreme Court will rule by then.  The justices heard debate Monday over how the governor should handle emergency orders during the coronavirus pandemic.  The question is whether Evers has the authority to issue multiple orders for an ongoing threat like the pandemic.  A ruling could overturn the statewide mask mandate, but the court may not decide by Friday.  State law says a governor can declare a state of emergency for 60 days, then it has to be approved by the Legislature.  Assistant Attorney General Hannah Schieber Jurss told the court the circumstances were different each time Evers issued another order.

Minneapolis will no longer host the 2021 N-C-A-A men’s basketball Midwest Regional. Officials announced today the entire tournament will be held in Indianapolis. The Division One men’s basketball committee decided that the 68-team field traveling during the 13 preliminary rounds of March Madness would not work during the pandemic. The NCAA Midwest Regional had been scheduled for March 25th to 27th at Target Center.

Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe says she thinks a recount can be completed by early next month.  The Trump campaign has said it wants to count the ballots again.  The first count had Democrat Joe Biden winning Wisconsin by a little over 20-thousand votes.  The deadline for the state’s election results to be certified is December 1st.  Wolfe says that date can be pushed back if there is a recount being conducted.  The last time Wisconsin had a recount it took 10 days to count the ballots in 2016.

Public health officials say doctors fighting the coronavirus plague need plasma from people who survived it.  Wisconsin hospitals are critically short of plasma from recovered coronavirus patients.  That plasma helps in the treatment.  There are nearly 70-thousand active cases in the state right now.  Doctor Thomas Abshire, with the Versiti Blood Center, says the demand for plasma right now is double the size of the supply.  Versiti is asking anyone who has beaten the virus to donate plasma immediately.

A 22-year-old Tomah man faces multiple charges after refusing to stop for a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy, hitting a deer while driving with his lights off, then causing a wreck with a squad car.  The incident started with Anthony D. Springman spotted driving 95 miles-an-hour in a 55 speed zone near Kendall.  By the time he was taken into custody, officers from three different law enforcement agencies were involved.  No injuries were reported during the pursuit Saturday night.  Springman is being held in the Monroe County Jail.

The Dane County District Attorney’s Office has cleared a Monona police officer for his role in the death of a suspect during a police pursuit.  The chase started two months ago following a traffic stop in Monona.  The driver took off and later crashed in Madison.  Investigators say Elliott Johnson refused orders from the officer to surrender.  As the officer approached the wrecked vehicle, Johnson shot himself.  Lethal force wasn’t being used at the time.

U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar is calling for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to deal with shortages of the flu vaccine.  The Minnesota Democrat says some communities don’t have enough and people are finding they can’t get the shots they need – especially in rural areas.  The C-D-C recommended everyone should get the protective shot by the end of October.  Klobuchar says if a person gets the flu right now there are fewer hospital beds available.  She says everyone needs to get the vaccine, so she wants to make sure it is available.

After a lot of work, customers are now able to buy Lake Superior whitefish, lake trout, and lake herring at the Red Cliff Fishing Company in Bayfield.  The project by the Red Cliff Bank of Lake Superior Chippewa has taken a decade to become a reality.  Some people were given an early look over the weekend.  In its first week of business, the fish market in northern Wisconsin processed about 75-thousand pounds of herring from Lake Superior.  The retail market portion of the business opened Monday at 10:00 a-m.
