The Durand-Arkansaw School District has received a $100,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Durand-Arkansaw School Superintendent Ryan Nelson says the grant will be used for a new robotic welder. Nelson says the new welder should be ready for classes next school year.
Wisconsin’s latest human case of West Nile Virus is reported in Dunn County, where county health department director KT Gallagher urges residents to take precautions. The Dunn County case was detected in a healthy blood donor and while most people will experience mild or no symptoms, West Nile can result in serious neurological damage in some infected persons. This is the state’s 12th human case of West Nile, and according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 10 of those have resulted in hospitalizations.
There could be an increase in admission to the Tarrant Park Pool next summer. Because of donations, the admission was $2 a person. Durand Mayor Patrick Milliren says that could increase to $4 for next summer. The city is working on finding donations to help keep the admission prices near the $2 mark.
The Dodge County Sheriff said the man who reportedly made threats while videotaping himself outside Byron High School, is now in custody. The sheriff’s office said Daniel James Lewison was taken into custody at 6:03 p.m. Thursday evening by Dodge County deputies and the West Concord Police Department. Early into the school day on Thursday, the Byron, Hayfield, Kasson-Mantorville and Triton schools were advised by law enforcement to enact a soft lockdown after Lewison posted the threatening video on facebook.
Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany is reintroducing legislation to have the Apostle Islands designated as a national park. The islands are just off the coast of the Red Cliff reservation and the Red Cliff Ojibwe tribe previously stated that they oppose such an action due to concerns about a possible influx of visitors. Tiffany introduced the measure in the House on Thursday saying that the Apostle Islands are a national treasure and deserve the distinction of becoming the state's first National Park.
A Jackson County resident is facing what records show to be his 11th charge of OWI. Fifty-six-year-old Charles Spangler of Alma Center was arrested Wednesday evening after a vehicle accident. Police say Spangler refused field sobriety tests and that a firearm was found in his vehicle. When arrested this week, Spangler was already on parole for an earlier OWI conviction.
Authorities in La Crosse are filing charges against a man accused of injuring four police officers and a nurse. Police responded Wednesday to a situation in which 24-year-old Devon Knapp reportedly had violated a no-contact order. When officers made contact with Knapp, reports say he bit two of them and later -- at a local hospital -- he injured two other officers and scratched a nurse. Charges against Knapp include battery to law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
The first headliner for the 2026 Northern Wisconsin State Fair has been announced. According to a Facebook post from the NWSF, Sawyer Brown will be joining them as a Leinenkugel’s Main Stage Performer on Wednesday, July 8. Tickets will be announced for sale at a later date.
The Universities of Wisconsin System adds security screenings for Board of Regents meetings this week. Attendees will be required to walk through metal detectors and anyone who refuses a screening or has a prohibited item will be denied entry. The Regents meet Thursday and Friday on the UW - Madison campus. Prohibited items include weapons, illegal substances, large banners, flags, or signs on sticks and noise making devices. University officials reported in July that at least four homes owned by members of the Board of Regents, including two in Madison, were vandalized with pro-Palestinian slogans.
A new round of state grant funding could help meet demand for skilled drivers. The Commercial Driver Training Grant program created by the Department of Workforce Development aims to provide sustainable wages, help Wisconsinites obtain their commercial driver's license, and meet demand in one of the state's most in-demand fields. The program reimburses the cost of training students for a CDL up to $30,000. Democratic Governor Tony Evers provided $500,000 for the program as part of the 2025-27 biennial budget. A historic car ferry that carries vehicles between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan has been damaged. The SS Badger made contact with the SS Spartan during a docking procedure on Wednesday night which caused damage to the car ferry's sea gate. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed by marine engineers to determine the necessary repairs end to ensure the vessel’s continued safe operation. The damage isn’t enough to stop the Badger from sailing as it is expected to continue its normal service between Ludington and Manitowoc. The Spartan was like the Badger in which it used to carry cars and passengers across Lake Michigan but stopped in 1980 because it wasn’t making money for the company that owned it. It’s now used for parts to keep the Badger running.
The University of Minnesota has ended its contract with ICE for the use of its shooting range. The university has also decided to discontinue agreements with all external agencies for officer training at the facility. Local law enforcement agencies had also been using the range. University Police Chief Eric Swanson stated that the decision followed careful evaluation of staffing needs, maintenance costs, and potential liability concerns. Beginning December 1st, outside agencies will no longer have access to the range located on UMore Park land. However, the University of Minnesota Police Department will continue to use the facility.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue is alerting the public to scam text messages that ask people for bank information to get a refund. The text starts with Your refund request has been processed and approved. The scheme pushes a sense of urgency by telling the recipient of the text that they have until September 18th to send bank information. State officials advise the public not to click on the link in the text, report it as a scam, and then delete it. Anyone who submitted their bank information is urged to contact their bank.
Oktoberfest USA in La Crosse is being recognized as one of the best Oktoberfest events in the country. Results released yesterday in USA Today's 2025 10 Best Reader's Choice awards rank the event as the sixth-best Oktoberfest celebration in the country. USA Today cited the festival's parade, medallion hunt, lederhosen games, carnival rides and abundance of beer as highlights of the event.
