 Firefighters from Durand, Plum City, and Mondovi responded yesterday to a fire at the Rooster Tail Bar and Grill in downtown Durand. According to Durand Fire, Firefighters were called to the bar after a neighboring business smelled smoke and saw flames near the bar area. Firefighters had to ventilate the bar and used about 1000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. No one was hurt in the blaze, and the damage estimate is between $25000-35000 dollars. The cause of that fire is still under investigation.


The Rural Partners Network is putting together an 8-county outdoor recreation plan to help Pepin County get state and federal funding to build more outdoor recreation opportunities in our area. The network is seeking input from Pepin County Business owners to help determine what recreational activities are needed in the area to best serve residents and attract tourists. Authorities now know the identity of the 19-year-old killed in a crash that happened near Stanley. State Patrol identified him as Treyton Tessmer and they believe alcohol use was a factor. The crash happened just before 4 a.m. on Sunday morning on Highway 29. A Chippewa County snow plow was plowing the road when it was hit from behind by Tessmer in his Jeep. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.


The Chippewa County Department of Public Health says there's a new Public Health Kiosk available for the public to use. The kiosk provides a variety of health and safety supplies like naloxone nasal spray to reverse opioid overdoses, fentanyl and xylazine testing kits, feminine hygiene products and safer sex kits. Other items include firearm locks and medication deactivation bags. The kiosk is located at the Chippewa County Jail and is accessible to all community members 24-seven.


Another phone scam in Western Wisconsin. The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department is reporting scammers are calling people identifying themselves as a sheriff’s department investigator and needs personal information from the victim to rectify an issue regarding missed jury duty. This is nothing but a scam as authorities will never call you and request personal information. If you receive a call like this you are to hang up.


A Western Wisconsin barn fire causes 550-thousand dollars in damage. The Rice Lake Fire Department says crews responded to the fire on 22nd Street yesterday afternoon to see smoke and flames at the center of the barn. They stayed for almost six hours to extinguish the fire. RLFD says no animals died, but crews helped rescue two cows and two chickens from the barn. A cause is still being investigated.


Friends and family of a Minnesota woman who was found dead last year are starting a foundation in her honor. Organizers announced the formation of the Madeline Kingsbury Foundation last week. The group will focus on domestic violence education and awareness and hopes to empower victims to take control of their lives and futures. Kingsbury's ex-boyfriend was found guilty of killing the Winona County woman last November. They note on their Facebook page that they are still working on getting approval to form a nonprofit and any donations made right now will not be tax-deductible.


It's time to find out if your home will be covered in case of a flood. The Department of Natural Resources is reminding you to check to see if your home qualifies for special flood insurance. Most homeowners policies do not cover that damage, and require special additions. Just one inch of water in a home can cause thousands of dollars in damage, so it's important to get that coverage. Starting today (Tuesday, February 4) – two weeks before Election Day – clerks can begin to issue in-person absentee ballots at the clerk’s office or another designated location. The in-person absentee voting process, sometimes called “early voting,” involves a voter both requesting a ballot and completing that ballot on the same trip to the clerk’s office or designated location. Voters need to show an acceptable photo ID when voting by in-person absentee ballot. Elections Administrator Megan Wolfe said voters who still need to request an absentee ballot by mail should act immediately.


US Senator Tammy Baldwin is a member of the committee overseeing the FAA and Transportation Department. On WISN’s “UpFront,” the Wisconsin Democrat said she doesn't believe that committee needs to launch its own investigation into last week’s deadly collision between a passenger plane and an Army Blackhawk helicopter in Washington DC. She said the committee lacks the expertise of the National Transportation Safety Board. and member of congress should wait for the agency to complete its investigation. She expects the committee to be briefed on the crash this week. Baldwin also said she found President Trump’s comments the day after the tragedy which killed 67 people to be “wholly inappropriate. Trump cast widespread blame for the crash, including diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.   


A Wisconsin-based airline announces layoffs. A notice filed with the state’s Workforce Development Department says Air Wisconsin will let go of 219 employees in management positions permanently, and 294 in union positions temporarily. Air Wisconsin’s regional flying agreement with American Airlines is set to end April 3rd, causing the airline to develop what it calls "alternative flying opportunities" which will be announced in weeks. According to the notice, the layoffs could begin as early as March 31st and will impact jobs at airports in Milwaukee and Appleton.


Record number of Wisconsinites sign up for healthcare through ACA. 313,579 Wisconsinites signed up during the 2025 open enrollment period, marking a nearly eighteen percent increase from the previous period and the state's highest enrollment number ever. Governor Tony Evers says making sure every Wisconsinite has access to affordable healthcare will always be a top priority for him. During his 2025 State of the State address, Evers announced healthcare efforts including increasing access to necessary prescription medicine and improving consumer protections.


A New Berlin man accused of impersonating a customs agent is facing felony charges. Waukesha County prosecutors say 34-year-ol Hank Glembin interfered with police twice in January, once while an officer was handling a deer crash in Muskego and another time at a traffic stop in New Berlin. Both times, Glembin was wearing counterfeit gear and presented himself as a border patrol agent. Glembin was arrested last week, and now faces felony identity theft and impersonating an officer charges. He'll be back in court February 13th.


The National Weather Service wants to offer students interested in meteorology some practical experience. The Twin Cities office in Chanhassen is accepting applications for summer volunteers. Students will work with the forecast operations staff, collecting data and helping with research. The deadline for applications is February 14th. The third annual World Euchre Championship is returning to New Glarus. The annual championship is the largest fundraiser for New Glarus Cares, a community nonprofit that supports local projects. The 2025 World Euchre Championship looks to be the biggest yet, with an expanded doubles format and a singles tournament where players are pitted against everyone. The championship weekend will also feature open euchre games at a number of New Glarus establishments. The tournament runs May 17th and 18th.
