 Investigators are saying the fire that destroyed Shooters Showgirls in Elk Mound was arson. The Dunn County Sheriff's Office made the announcement on Tuesday in a press release. They said investigators continued to review video evidence and interview Colton Jansen from Comstock about the fire, who admitted he was involved. He was then arrested. Shooters went up in flames on Saturday morning.


The Durand City Council is meeting tonight. Items on the agenda include discussion and possible action on creating a room tax ordinance, the creation of a farmers market and the authorization to directly charge water bills for public fire protection. There will also be reports from the Mayor and department heads. Tonights meeting begins at 6:30 at Durand City Hall and will be live streamed on the video streaming page of the WRDN Website.


The Feed My People Food Bank's Board of Directors are announcing who their new executive director is. Padraig Gallagher has been appointed for the position. He will join Feed My People in March after transitioning from his current position as executive director at Stepping Stones of Dunn County in Menomonie. Gallagher succeeds Suzanne Becker, who announced her retirement last November. Gallagher will be the 6th executive director in Feed My People's 43-year history.


An area health care provider is asking for volunteers for their crime victim services team. The  Gundersen Health System’s Crime Victim Services team and their volunteers help people navigate the aftermath of domestic violence and sexual assault. Team members assist victims during the day and volunteers can be called in to help overnight or on the weekends. Gundersen requires volunteers to attend forty hours of training, to work at least two shifts a month, and to sign up for volunteering for at least one year. Volunteers are need in the Eau Claire and La Crosse Areas. Contact the Family Support Center of Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire for more information.


A 17 year old is being charged with attempted armed robbery. On Monday night, Anthony Ulvestad was arrested and taken to the La Crosse County Jail after a victim contacted police for a gun incident. They said they were in their car when a suspect came up to their car and broke the window with a gun. The victim was able to drive away and Ulvestad was found to be the suspect. Along with attempted armed robbery, the 17-year-old is also being charged with possessing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing an officer and more. The investigation is still active. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 24th.


Eleven Wisconsin residents are getting pardons from President Trump after being convicted of crimes related to the January sixth riots in Washington. The citizens had pleaded guilty to or were found guilty of various misdemeanors and felonies in federal court for their involvement in the Capitol insurrection in 2021. This includes an Iron County man who admitted to pepper spraying police officers and a man from Eau Claire who was caught trying to leave the country. Trump has pardoned more than 15-hundred total rioters.


Law enforcement in Olmsted County will be shifting to encrypted radio communication by the end of this month. County deputies and Rochester police officers will begin encrypting their transmission on Monday. Officials say the shift to encrypted communication is an attempt to enhance security and protect the privacy of crime victims and juveniles. Both agencies say they remain committed to transparency and will provide information to the public and the media as it becomes available.


Experts believe declining birth rates are likely to cause future challenges for the state of Wisconsin. Data from Forward Analytics shows the number of children born in the state fell by over nine percent between 2000 and 2024. This trend may make it difficult for Wisconsin businesses to maintain an adequate workforce as time goes on, according to analysts. The lower numbers could also lead to enrollment declines for public colleges and universities.


Republican state lawmakers are introducing a measure that would allow political candidates to remove their names from the ballot in Wisconsin. The legislation is a response to the situation that came up in the election cycle last year when Robert Kennedy Junior was unable to withdraw as an independent candidate in the presidential race. Kennedy ended his campaign and endorsed Donald Trump then tried to get his name removed to avoid splitting the vote. State law would not allow for the withdrawal. The proposed legislation would let candidates take themselves out of consideration before ballots are printed by submitting a sworn statement and paying a fee.


Wisconsin is joining a multi-state coalition challenging President Trump's plan to end birthright citizenship. President Trump signed an executive order that would revoke citizenship for people whose parents were illegal immigrants when they were born on US land. Governor Tony Evers [[ EE-vurs ]] and Attorney General Josh Kaul [[ CALL ]] say the change would violate the Constitution. Seventeen other states and two cities are also joining the lawsuit.


The DeForest Village's Public Services Committee voted 5-2 in favor of removing the mineral last month. Some members of the village board argue keeping fluoride in the drinking water isn't safe and say the village can save money by not having to replace aging equipment needed to add fluoride to water. Fluoride has been in drinking water across the country for more than 75 years and is shown to reduce tooth decay and its use is backed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.


A death following an officer pursuit in Oneida County is being investigated. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, an attempted traffic stop by a sheriff’s deputy there Friday night led to a chase. The pursued vehicle carrying six people then drove into the wrong lane of traffic and crashed into another vehicle in the town of Newbold, northwest of Rhinelander. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene, while the other five in the vehicle were hospitalized for treatment. The officer involved was placed on administrative leave.


The Dane County Airport is getting a new K9. Dorjee is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois German Shepard mix from Hungary. The Sheriff's Office tells 27 News that Dorjee has gone through extensive training specific to airport security, and can sniff out guns, explosives, and shell casings. Though the new K9 is friendly, he should not be approached without permission from his handler.


Marquette University is officially naming a new vice president and director of its athletics department. Mike Broeker is taking over the role, replacing Bill Scholl [[ rhymes with BOWL ]] who is retiring after a decade at Marquette. Broeker has almost 30 years of experience in athletics administration and served as the deputy director of athletics at Marquette for 18 years. Broeker will be introduced in his new role this Thursday at an event in the Alumni Memorial Union.


The Department of Natural Resources is asking you to consider a donation when filling out your tax forms. Natural Heritage Conservation Bureau Director Drew Feldkirchner says it's a great way to help the rare plants, animals, and natural places in Wisconsin. Feldkircher says each dollar donated is matched by the DNR and used to apply for grants that require match funding. To make a donation, look for "endangered resources" in the "donations" section of your Wisconsin income tax form.
