No one is saying how many workers at the Leinenkugel brewery in Chippewa Falls will lose their jobs when the brewery closes. Molson Coors, which owns the Leinie's brand, yesterday said it is closing the historic brewery in Chippewa Falls, and moving beer production to Milwaukee. The company says they are looking to 'centralize' brewing in Milwaukee. The Leinie Lodge, and the pilot brewery next door, will remain open. The closing is scheduled for January.
The company that employed a man who died in a water tank in Wisconsin will have to pay nearly 60-thousand dollars in fines after a settlement. Carlos Medina of Texas was working in the Blair water tank in March when he became cold and fatigued. OSHA says his equipment got tangled, and other workers weren't able to pull him out in time. Liquid Engineering Corporation of Kentucky was cited with seven serious OSHA violations. The company will have to provide proof that they've corrected all violations as part of the settlement.
Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident in Martell Township on Wednesday. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, 41-year-old Sondra MacDonald of Baldwin was traveling westbound on 799th Avenue when she entered the ditch while attempting to make a right-hand turn onto Hwy 63 northbound. MacDonald and a 3-year-old passenger were taken to Western Wisconsin Health in Baldwin.
A paraeducator at Menomonie High School will be sentenced in February for sexually assaulting a student. Quinton M. Williams pleaded no contest Tuesday to one count of sexual assault of a student by school staff. Williams was charged last October after the student told investigators she started talking with Williams over Snapchat. She said they began a relationship, and that he gave her alcohol. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend a year in jail, probation, registering as a sex offender for 15 years, and that Williams will not work with people under the age of 18.
A Sparta man faces homicide charges in connection with the drunk driving crash that killed a construction worker last week. 25-year-old Isaac Morales Jr. is accused of crashing into a piece of construction equipment after losing control of his car near Oakdale November 1st. That crash killed the 35-year-old operator. Morales now faces charges of reckless homicide, first time OWI, and various reckless driving felonies. He's being held in Monroe County on a 250-thousand dollar cash bond and will be back in court in December.
Prosecutors in Rusk County are moving ahead with charges against a registered sex offender who they say lied about where he was living. Michael Crouse has been on Wisconsin's sex offender registry since his 2004 conviction for child sexual assault. He's supposed to let the state know where he lives, but investigators say he lied about living in Bloomer. They also say Crouse was babysitting children. Before moving to Bloomer, prosecutors say Crouse was homeless in Ladysmith.
Wisconsin got close to record turnout for this week's election. The state's Elections Commission yesterday said 72-point-six percent of people who are eligible to vote, did vote on Tuesday. That's just below the record turnout of 73-point-two percent in 2004. In all, the Elections Commission said, three-point-four million people voted in this year's election. The big draw was, of course, the presidential race. The Commission says about 30 thousand fewer people voted in the state's U.S. Senate race, and 193 thousand fewer people voted on the state citizens-only voting referendum. The City of Durand reported about 90% voter turnout.
The election is over, and now the yard signs must go. Wisconsin law says people have seven days from yesterday, the day after the election, to pull their political yard signs from their yards. That includes the bigger signs that are often put-up on busy streets and corners. It will be up to local authorities, however, to decide what to do if people don't get rid of their signs quickly enough.
Derrick Van Orden wins reelection in 3rd Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race in favor of the Republican incumbent Wednesday afternoon, when he held 51.4% of the vote over Democratic Challenger Rebecca Cooke with 99% of the votes in. Van Orden first won in 2022 when he faced Democratic state Senator Brad Pfaff in one of the most competitive Congressional districts in the state. Cooke, a non-profit owner from Eau Claire, previously ran for the seat in 2022 but finished second in the Democratic primary. The 3rd Congressional District encompasses most of western and parts of central Wisconsin.
Democrats make gains in the Wisconsin Legislature. New district maps drawn by Democratic Governor Tony Evers and approved by Republican lawmakers helped Democrats peel off four seats in the state Senate, leaving Republicans with a narrower 18-14 majority. Sarah Keyeski, a mental health counselor from Lodi, defeated 14th District Republican Joan Ballweg of Markesan. In the newly drawn 30th District in the Green Bay area, business consultant Jamie Wall defeated Allouez Village Board President Jim Rafter. In southeast Wisconsin’s 8th District, attorney Jodi Habush Sinykin defeated state Senator Duey Stroebel for the seat currently held by Republican Senator Dan Knodl, who ran for state Assembly. And in the Appleton area, Democrat Kristen Alfheim defeated Republican Wayne Phillips in the 18th District currently held by Dan Feyen, who ran in the 20th District.
Wisconsin's state superintendent says it's not a good thing that school districts across the state asked voters for more yesterday. State Superintendent Jill Underly last night said the need for local tax increases shows that Wisconsin is not spending enough on public schools. Over 100 school districts had tax increase questions on yesterday's ballot. It remains to be seen just how many of them passed.
A Wisconsin dairy is voluntarily recalling several ice cream products. Madison's Babcock Dairy says more than 40 cases of ice cream labeled as Chocolate Peanut Butter actually have their Orange Custard Chocolate Chip flavor inside. The dairy says people who are allergic to eggs or Yellow number-five dye could have serious reactions. Anyone who bought either flavor of ice cream with the production date September 17 stamped on the bottom can return it for a full refund.
Polling places in Whitewater stayed open late Tuesday night. A circuit court judge granted the extension after Walworth County Circuit Court filings showed that the two polling locations experienced "significant delays due to inadequate staffing and insufficient numbers of BadgerBooks, which are used to check in voters. The court filings described the voter turnout as "unprecedented." The voters who were in line at the two locations when the polls were supposed to close at eight were able to stay and vote until 10:30 Tuesday night.
