Some Republicans and Democrats at the Wisconsin Capitol agree that they don't like the newly proposed medical marijuana program in the state. Western Wisconsin Representative Clint Moses along with a number of Republicans yesterday pitched a plan to open five state-owned marijuana dispensaries and allow some people with chronic or severe medical conditions to buy some marijuana products. Smokeable marijuana is not one of them. Some Democrats, like Madison Senator Melissa Agard, say the medical program is too restrictive and won't help enough people. While some Republicans, like state Representative Barbara Dittrich, says she doesn't want to open the door to fully legal pot in the state. Supporters think they have enough votes to pass the program, and Governor Evers has said he will sign it.

The long wait for the first decision in the murder of 10-year-old Lily Peters is due this month. The judge in the case has said he will decide by the end of January if the teenage suspect in Peters' murder will be tried in adult court. Peters was killed back in April of 2022, and the trial for murder has been on hold because of delays in the court system in Chippewa Falls. If the trial is moved to adult court, the suspect who was 14-years-old at the time, would face a much stiffer sentence.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages the public to report any black bear den locations across Wisconsin to help with an ongoing black bear reproduction study.  While reporting all den locations is critical to the success of this study, there is a particular need for reports in Buffalo and Pierce Counties.  The public is encouraged to report as much information about occupied black bear dens as possible without approaching or disturbing the dens.  Helpful information includes a photo of the den showing it relative to the surroundings, the GPS location, and a description of the location of the den.  For more information visit the Wisconsin DNR Website.

The driver of the truck that ended up inside Eau Claire's Regency Inn & Suites is the only person hurt in last night's crash. Police say a pickup truck burst through the wall and into a room last night. The truck was so far in the room that it trapped the people who were staying there. Eau Claire Police say the truck's driver was hurt, but they're not saying how badly.

A La Crosse brewer looks to cash in on a controversy.  608 Brewing Company announced a Chancellor Joe Gow themed beer in a Monday Facebook post. The reveal of the “Hot For Chancellor” brew comes less than two weeks after the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously to fire Gow after becoming aware of porn videos featuring the chancellor and his wife. The beer is “a sour ale fruited with cherries, apricots, peaches and vanilla,” according to the craft brewer, and packs a walloping five percent alcohol by volume. The can features a cartoon of Gow carrying a bowl of fruit and a strategically placed sign reading “censored.”

The Red Cross is sounding the alarm about a critical blood shortage in Wisconsin. The Red Cross yesterday said blood donations are at a 20 year low. Dr. Eric Gehrie says the situation is dire as we head into the depth of the winter season. He says all blood types are needed, but Type O blood is needed most. The Red Cross says the number of blood donors across the country has dropped by 40 percent over the past 20 years. They are hoping that by sounding the alarm, they can get more people to donate.

At the Capitol, Republicans advance a bill to restrict public resources from going to abortionsThe bill (SB-300) approved by a party-line vote in a state Senate committee on Monday would prohibit all state and local government employees from providing abortions, abortion information, referrals or training, and ban the use of public property for those purposes. It does not prohibit physicians from providing abortion care if the life of a pregnant woman is at risk and all reasonable measures to save the life of the mother and child have been taken. If it gets to his desk, Governor Tony Evers would be likely to veto the bill.

A new interactive map shows where funds are being distributed in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says 888-million federal dollars has gone toward state transportation infrastructure projects. They have developed a map and dashboard that will break down the cities, communities, and Tribes getting that funding since 2009. The DOT says the map will also help Wisconsin communities find money they could qualify for. The map and data can be found on the Wisconsin DOT's website.

Governor Evers says he's open to a tax cut for retirees in Wisconsin. The governor was a guest on Capital City Sunday on Madison TV over the weekend. He said he's keeping an open mind about the plan from Republicans to make Wisconsin tax-free for retirees. The governor said he won't support a plan that mostly benefits the very, very wealthy, but said he's 'open to' the idea of a tax cut. Evers said he may ask Republicans to tie the tax cut to an increase in childcare funding. The governor has been pushing for that extra childcare spending since the federal coronavirus emergency order expired last year.

A Minnesota dairy farm is being sued in what Attorney General Keith Ellison calls "one of the biggest" wage theft enforcement actions in state history.  Evergreen Acres Dairy is accused of withholding at least three-million-dollars in wages from its workers and retaliating against those who asked questions about their paychecks.  Evergreen Acres has locations in Stearns and Redwood counties.  During a news conference this morning, Ellison said the lawsuit sends "a message that we will fight wage theft to make sure that every worker in Minnesota takes home every penny that they have earned, no matter how big the employer or how vulnerable the worker."
