 Gov. Tony Evers announced Friday his appointment of Jeff Doughty as the next Pepin County Coroner. The appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of John Albers, effective Jan. 18, 2023.  Doughty has 23 years of experience as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and has been serving as the chief deputy coroner for Pepin County. He served as director of Maiden Rock–Plum City Area Ambulance Service, assistant director of Durand Ambulance Service, and vice president of Arkansaw Memorial Cemetery. In these roles, he has developed a close working relationship with the Pepin County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Department. 


A Monona, IA man was arrested by the Clayton County Sheriff's Department after an investigation by the Buffalo County and Clayton County, Iowa Sheriff's Departments.  Kaleb Krzyszton was taken into custody by Clayton County Deputies after the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department issued an arrest warrant after investigators received information that Krzyszton was downloading child pornography while at a residence in Waumandee Township in late 2022.  The investigation was a cooperative effort between the two law enforcement agencies and the Wisconsin Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.  


 This should be the last really hot day of the week. The National Weather Service is once again expecting a day in the 90s across western Wisconsin.  There is a Heat Advisory in place til 5 p.m. tonight for folks in Pepin, Pierce, Buffalo, Wabash, and Goodhue Counties.   Forecasters say a round of storms tonight and into tomorrow will break this heat, however, the storms could be severe this afternoon and evening for the WRDN Listening Area.  By Thursday, the high is expected to be just 66 degrees. 


Firefighters say no one was hurt in a house fire not far from Carson Park. Crews responded to a 911 call from a house in the 13-hundred block of Raedel Road about 2:30 Sunday afternoon. No one was home. Firefighters say the fire was in the garage and did about 75 thousand-dollars worth of damage to the home. Three cats who were inside were rescued and are safe. 


No one was injured after a family dog alerted homeowners that the house was on fire early this morning in Eau Claire.  According to firefighters, crews responded to the blaze on Hillview Road and found the rear deck of the home on fire.  All of the residents had evacuated the home and were not injured.  Damage is estimated at $25000 and the cause of that fire is still under investigation.


One person is dead after a motorcycle vs vehicle accident in Barron County on Saturday afternoon.  According to the Barron County Sheriff's Department, 68yr old Caryn Becker of Cameron, pulled out from a stop sign on Hwy O onto Hwy 8 and failed to see a motorcycle on Hwy 8 driven by 73yr old Steven Roest of Barron.  Lifesaving measures were conducted on Roest, but he died from his injuries.    Becker received minor injuries in that accident.


The plan to clarify Wisconsin's in-school strip search law is moving forward this week. There will be a hearing on the plan to make it clear that school administrators cannot strip-search students. The clarification comes after a superintendent in northeast Wisconsin strip-searched a handful of teenage girls while looking for a vape cartridge. The superintendent wasn't prosecuted because she stripped the girls down to their underwear, not fully naked. The new law makes it clear that school administrators do not have that power. 


It could soon cost you a thousand bucks if you don't stop for a school bus in Wisconsin. Lawmakers are looking at a plan that hikes up the fine for not stopping for stopped buses. Right now the fine ranges between 30 and 300 dollars. Lawmakers want to increase that to between three-hundred and a-thousand dollars. The new plan would also add three demerit points against anyone convicted of not stopping for the bus. 


Two people are dead after drowning in a lake in far northwestern Wisconsin. It happened at Lipsett Lake in the town of Rusk. on Friday. The Burnett County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-olds Grace Rhine and Kyree Schaw from Blaine, Minnesota went swimming but slipped below the water. Deputies say high winds and choppy waters played a role in their drownings. A third person on the lake was treated and released. The sheriff's office says the investigation remains open. 


 Members of the Minnesota National Guard are heading to Louisiana to help fight wildfires there.  About a dozen members of the Guard are expected to leave today along with two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters.  Governor Walz thanked the Guard members in a statement, adding "Minnesotans don't stand by when there's a call for help."  The governor of Louisiana requested air support to help with fire operations under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.


The FBI is sharing new, aged pictures of the suspect in the bombing at UW-Madison back in 1970.  The FBI yesterday unveiled pictures of what they think Leo Frederick Burt looks like today.  Burt was the only one of four suspects in the bombing at Sterling Hall to escape arrest.  That bombing, part of a Vietnam War protest, killed a man and injured four others.  Burt has been on the run for more than 50 years.  There's still a 150-thousand dollar reward for his capture.  Burt has ties to Wisconsin, New York, Boston, and Ontario, Canada. 


A former Green Bay pastor is going to prison for attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.  40-year-old Cory Herthel will serve at least 15 years in federal prison for an inappropriate online sexual relationship with a minor child in Venezuela. In pleading guilty, Herthel admitted to sending nude videos to the child who he met on a missionary trip, and that the child sent similar photos and videos at Herthel's request. He also admitted sending the child payments via various online apps. Upon completion of his sentence, Herthel will register as a lifetime sexual offender. 


 Dane County Farm is getting more than 13-thousand dollars in federal funds to set up a solar-electric array. The project will help Anu Sky Farm in Stoughton save 15-hundred dollars annually. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is awarding 266 million dollars to improve renewable energy operations nationwide.


 Vending machines with fentanyl test strips and Narcan are coming to Wisconsin. The state health services department is giving out 15 grants to local governments to set up the vending machines. Narcan can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. A report by Wisconsin-based Forward Analytics says fentanyl is the leading cause of death for 25- to 54-year-olds in the state.


 Another Minnesota law enforcement agency is pulling its officers from local schools due to a law that restricts the type of force that can used to restrain students.  The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office will not be sending its three school resource officers back to campuses over concerns about the law passed earlier this year.  Undersheriff Jason Akerson says the law exposes officers to civil and criminal liability because it's too ambiguous.  Several other Minnesota law enforcement agencies have also pulled their school resource officers and don't plan to return them to schools until the policy is clarified or repealed.


Taylor Swift fans in Eau Claire will be able to catch her tour at the movie theater. Micon Cinemas yesterday announced it will show the Eras Tour concert film in October. Tickets go on sale today. Swift announced the film yesterday on social media. Her Eras Tour has been one of the most successful concert tours of the summer, selling out stadiums from coast to coast. The movie will make its debut on October 13th.
