An appeal is possible of the decision by a La Crosse County judge not to grant a new trial to a man convicted of killing his wife.  The motion by attorneys for Todd Kendhammer was denied.  A jury found Kendhammer guilty in 2017 of killing the victim, Barbara Kendhammer.  He maintains she was killed when a pipe from another vehicle crashed through their car’s windshield.  The next step would be taking the request to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.

The race for the First District U-S House seat formerly held by the late Congressman Jim Hagedorn is officially underway. G-O-P primary winner Brad Finstad of New Ulm filed Tuesday to run in the August Ninth special election, citing his experience of “providing jobs as a small employer in southern Minnesota.” Democratic rival Jeff Ettinger says, despite the seat being previously held by a Republican, the First is definitely a “purple” district. The August special election determines who serves the remainder of Hagedorn’s term through the end of the year.

Wisconsin wildlife officials are urging people to be on the lookout for female turtles laying their eggs.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says female turtles will be laying their eggs for the next couple of weeks. That means more turtles will be out on the roads, especially near wetlands. The D-N-R says wood turtles and Blanding’s turtles are especially vulnerable. Wildlife officials are asking people to report turtle crossings, so they can better track turtles.

U-S Senator Ron Johnson says stiffer background checks for people buying guns would not stop mass shootings at American schools.  The Wisconsin Republican says people will always fall through the cracks and you can’t arrest someone for a crime they haven’t committed yet.  Johnson spoke on “Fox News Business” last week.  He says mass shootings are a much larger issue and a simple new gun law won’t solve it.  Johnson claims schools have “stopped teaching values” and are teaching “wokeness” instead while indoctrinating children with “things like C-R-T.”

Wisconsin politicians are not on the same page on how to prevent future school shootings. The Speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly says there should be a discussion about arming teachers. Republican Robin Vos says he’d also like to talk about having more police officers or armed guards at schools. Governor Evers says he doesn’t think classroom teachers in Wisconsin even want to be armed.  The Democratic governor says he’d prefer something like new background-check laws instead.

The closing days of the school term in Kiel have been held virtually after a Title Nine investigation at the middle school spread to affect the entire small city.  W-B-A-Y/T-V reports three eighth-grade boys are being investigated for gender-based harassment after refusing to use a student’s chosen pronouns.  The local response led Kiel city officials to cancel the Memorial Day parade as a precaution.  Classes went online after the school district and the city received a series of bomb threats.  A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the students who are being investigated – asking that the complaint be dropped.

Authorities in southeastern Minnesota are investigating a death in the city of Morristown.  The Rice County Sheriff's Office says deputies called to a disturbance early today (Tuesday) and found a man dead at the scene.  Another man was taken into custody.  Investigators say there is no threat to the community.  They have not released the victim's name, cause, or manner of death.

The statue of Colonel Hans Christian Heg has been rededicated at the Wisconsin State Capitol.  Heg was the highest-ranking Union officer from Wisconsin to be killed in the Civil War.  The statue was torn down by rioters who were protesting against racial injustice two years ago.  Heg’s descendants find that ironic since he stood for justice for all and was a strong abolitionist.  More than two dozen of his descendants were present for the ceremony in Madison Sunday.
