Local-Regional News August 4

A special meeting of the Durand-Arkansaw School District Board will be this afternoon. The Board will be discussing and taking action on details of the re-entry plan for the 2020-2021 school year, discussion and action on the fall extra-curricular plan and discussion and possible action on the requirement of staff to wear masks. This afternoon's meeting begins at 4pm at Durand High School gym. The meeting will be live streamed on the WRDN Facebook Page and You Tube Channel along with the School District Zoom Platform. The meeting is also open to the public to attend in person.


Many sheriff departments across Wisconsin have announced they wont or they dont have the manpower to enforce Governor Evers Statewide mask mandate. Pepin County Sheriff Joel Wener says the department does not have the staff to enforce the mandate, but the department will do its best to get voluntary compliance. Wener stresses that his decision does not mean the department is pro or anti mask.


One person Is dead after a motorcycle accident in Glencoe Township on Sunday. According to the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department 24yr old Sharmarke Shoble of Rochester was traveling westbound on Hwy 95 when he lost control while negotiating a curve. Shoble was med-flighted to a La Crosse Hospital where he died from his injuries. Speed is believe to be a factor in that accident which remains under investigation.


The Altoona Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing person. The department posted the request on it Facebook page yesterday. 33Yr old Angela Coffield of Altoona was last seen July 29th around 8:30pm driving a tan Buick Century with Wisconsin plates ADL-2030. If you have seen Angela or have any information about her location you are asked to contact the Altoona Police Department.



A Chippwea Falls man has been sentenced to federal prision for being a felon in possession of guns. 26Yr old Joshua Reedy was arrested in Eau Clarie in August of 2019 while in possession of a stolen sawed off shotgun, a hunting knife, crow bar and he was wearing body armor. Judge William Conley sentenced Reedy to 3 ½ yrs in federal prison and three years of extended supervision after his release.


The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office is looking to raise ten-thousand dollars to continue the investigations into three unsolved baby deaths.   They include a newborn girl found by a fisherman floating in the water near Red Wing in 1999,  a newborn boy was ashore on Lake Pepin in 2003, and a newborn girl located in the marina at Treasure Island Casino in 2017.  Authorities are working with Parabon Snapshot D-N-A Analysis on a genealogy report for the girl found in 1999.   About five-thousand dollars is committed to that case.  Sheriff's officers are asking the public for help raising another ten-thousand to cover the cost for the boy and second girl.  A fundraising account has been set up with JusticeDrive.


The Wisconsin Valley Conference has delayed the start of their fall high school sports season. Following a discussion between superintendents and health officials from the league's four-county footprint officials announced that no events will be held before mid-September. Sports considered to be a low risk for COVID-19 transmission like golf, cross country, and swimming will begin practice September 1st and competition by the 17th. Sports considered High-risk like football, volleyball, and soccer may begin practice by the 7th with games beginning after the 25th. The decision breaks from the WIAA's recommendation that low-risk sports begin in late August with all others starting up in early September, and comes after health officials wrote a letter to all conference schools urging them to successfully complete at least four weeks of in-person classes before starting interscholastic competition.


A Marine from Wisconsin is listed among those presumed dead after an accident during a training exercise last week.  Nineteen-year-old rifleman P-f-c Evan Bath of Oak Creek is one of the eight troops still missing.  The Marines called off the search Sunday after three days of rescue operations.  The amphibious assault vehicle sank in hundreds of feet of water off San Clemente Island last Thursday.  Eight Marines were rescued, but one died later and two are in critical condition.


Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is asking for a U-S Small Business Administration disaster declaration which would make low-interest loans available to property owners affected by riots in the Twin Cities after the death of George Floyd.  Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan visited Lake Street businesses impacted by the civil unrest in May Monday afternoon.   Nearly 15-hundred businesses were damaged or destroyed by vandalism, fire or looting.  Last month, the Trump administration refused the governor's request for a federal disaster declaration.


The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports the numbers confirm it – the coronavirus hits the state’s elderly population the hardest.  One death Sunday ran Wisconsin’s death toll to 948.  Only 49 of those victims were people under the age of 50.  Doctors say the vast majority of the people who died are older than 70.  So far, the D-H-S is reporting no coronavirus deaths among children and teenagers.


The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis says fear is contributing to a declining economy.  Neel Kashkari appeared on C-B-S’ “Face the Nation” Sunday.  He talked about the U-S gross domestic product dropping a record 32-point-nine percent this year.  Kashkari says one positive note is that Americans are saving about 12 percent more than they were before the coronavirus pandemic.  He predicts the country will be able to pay off its deficit spending if and when the economy takes off.


Appleton police say no one was injured when a gun fired several shots at someone checking out an abandoned motorcycle.  The incident happened Saturday at about 2:45 a-m.  A driver stopped to check on the motorcycle lying on the side of the road.  That’s when the shots were fired.  Police say the suspect admitted firing his gun.  At least one of the bullets hit a parked car.  No names have been released.  Investigators say they are trying to determine a motive for the shooting.


Wisconsin's mask mandate has been in effect since Saturday, but the debate rages on. Republican State Senator Chris Kapenga tells WKOW-TV'S Capitol City Sunday that there's no need for a mask mandate, because Wisconsin's hospitals can handle new coronavirus cases. Democratic State Senator Chris Larson said the mask order is necessary to try and slow down the spread. Larson says his own informal poll shows plenty of support for a mask order.


The Minneapolis Police Department is reported to be down by at least 100 officers since the George Floyd incident.  The Star Tribune reports that is a 10-percent decline.  Over the last two months, 40 police officers have resigned, been fired, or are in the process of leaving the force.  Another 75 have taken a medical leave of absence for post-traumatic stress disorder they say was caused by protests following Floyd’s death.  The newspaper reports residents say police are taking longer to respond to emergency calls like homicide, shootings and robberies.


Weeks of working from home are starting to melt into months of working from home, and experts from UW-Madison are reminding you to take care of yourself. Professor Christine Whelan says the best thing you can do is remember to set up schedules and break up your home life from the time you're spending doing work.  She also says people shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed if they find out they're getting work done faster, and that some people work better in environments outside an office.


The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture is reporting hundreds of state residents have turned in suspicious packages of seeds in the mail. State ag officials put out a warning last week. About 500 people responded by turning packages of seeds they received which hadn’t been ordered. People have been told not to plant them and not to throw them away. There is still no official word about what the seeds really are and why someone is sending them.
