Local-Regional News March 4

Area law enforcement is warning residents of an increase in scam calls during the tax season. Scammers are targeting older residents posing as IRS agents claiming the victim owes the IRS money and it must be paid immediately or police will come to the home to arrest the victim. This is nothing more than a scam as the IRS would not make such a call. Scammers are also posing as Law Enforcement or even family members and they claim the family member is out of state and is in jail needing bail money. Again this is most likely a scam as Law Enforcement would never call a person that has an active warrant.

The City of Menomonie is working on a security plan as there is a possibility of presidential candidates coming tot he city later this month. The Wisconsin Farmers Union will be hosting a Dairyland Forum to attract the candidates to the area on March 29th at the Dunn County Fairgrounds. Menomonie Police Chief Eric Anderson says if no candidates are in attendance, then the city should have no problem with security, however if the candidates show up, there could be some issues the city will have to face. One possible plan by the city would included a total of 70 security officers, a mobile command center, and paramedics and ambulances. The city didn't take any action on the plan and will work further with the WFU to determine two plans of action depending on security needs.

The man convicted of killing three Girl Scouts and a mother in November of 2018 will be sentenced next week. Colten Treu will be sentenced in Chippewa County Court and is facing up to 165yrs in prison. Treu is also facing drug charges in connection with another incident in which he was allegedly involved in a rollover crash. A two day trial is set for that case at the end of May.

A St. Croix County jury has found a New Richmond man guilty of second-degree reckless homicide in his son’s death.  It was the second trial for 44-year-old Kayle Fleischauer.  He was found guilty in the first trial, but the result was tossed out based on a claim of juror misconduct.  The defense had claimed 19-year-old Chase Fleischauer accidentally shot himself to death.  The younger man was visiting from his Minnesota home when the two apparently fought before the shooting.  An autopsy showed Chase Fleischauer had suffered a skull fracture and was bruised during the incident in April 2018.

A four-year-old girl is expected to be okay after being hit by a vehicle while trying to get on the school bus Tuesday morning in northwestern Wisconsin.  The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office says the Winter School District bus was stopped with its lights on when an S-U-V driven by a Hayward woman passed on the right side and struck the student.  Deputies say the girl was under the front of the S-U-V when it stopped.  The victim was taken to a Hayward hospital and has since been released.  The driver was taken into custody for recklessly causing injury and was cited for multiple traffic offenses.

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind says he is worried about the future of Obamacare.  The Affordable Care Act is being challenged in a case that has come before the U-S Supreme Court.  Kind says the high court could strike down the federal health care program and leave thousands of people in Wisconsin without health insurance.  The Democratic congressman says people would lose their protections against pre-existing conditions if the Obamacare rules are struck down.

A Rochester man will serve 17 years in federal prison for his role in a major methamphetamine bust in southeastern Minnesota.   The U-S Attorney's Office says 30-year-old Steven Lindquist received a 204-month sentence for conspiracy to distribute meth.  Lindquist and 24-year-old Tiffany Gauthier were indicted after authorities found 55 pounds of meth hidden in the gas tank of a pickup last May.   Prosecutors say Lindquist was caught a few weeks later with 615 grams of meth at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton County.   Gauthier was sentenced to five years in the case.

A Wisconsin appeals court has rejected a request from two airlines that they get a refund of four-point-two million dollars they paid in taxes.  Southwest Airlines and Air Tran Airways filed a suit after merging in 2011 arguing they flew enough flights to qualify as hub facilities under Wisconsin law.  That law offers a tax exemption.  The 1st District Court of Appeals handed down its ruling Tuesday, saying the two airlines didn’t have enough flights out of the Dane County Regional Airport to qualify for the exemption.

He didn’t spend any money in Minnesota – and didn’t even visit – but former Vice President Joe Biden emerged victorious in the presidential primary Tuesday.  Biden was boosted by the endorsement from  Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar after she ended her campaign.  Klobuchar had been favored to win in her home state of Minnesota.  Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders figured to win and he held a big rally in St. Paul Monday night.  It didn’t turn out that way in the end.

Senator Tammy Baldiwn says she's putting pressure on insurance companies that sell short term insurance plans, so-called junk plans, to ensure that they're going to make testing for COVID-19 or the coronavirus available to all of their patients. Baldwin says that making actually using insurance you've purchased cost prohibitive puts other people at risk because of a lack of medical care.

Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry told CNBC on Tuesday that sporting events could possibly ban fans if the coronavirus outbreak worsens -- including Major League Baseball.   Lasry said that basketball games in Europe have already barred fans because of the virus and that the National Basketball Association could do the same if more people get sick.

Authorities in Washington County have called off the search for armed carjackers.  Sheriff Martin Schulteis says the story about an armed man stealing a truck last weekend was made up.  That truck driver, in some way, was trying to realize some financial gain by fabricating the carjacking story.  The sheriff says his department spent a lot of time and money trying to run down what turned out to be a hoax.  It isn’t clear if any charges will be filed for a false report.

President Donald Trump is supporting former Lieutenant Governor Michelle Fischbach in her run for Congress in Minnesota's 7th District.  Trump officially endorsed Fischbach in a tweet Monday night.  The president wrote, "Michelle will protect the unborn, is Strong on Crime & Borders, Cutting Taxes, your #2A, Loves our Military, Vets, & will stand w/ our Great Farmers. Michelle has my Complete & Total Endorsement!"  Fischbach is the favorite to win the Republican nomination and face 15-term D-F-L Congressman Collin Peterson.  The chairman of the U-S House Agriculture Committee has not announced whether he'll seek re-election this fall.

Quick-thinking customers were able to barricade a theft suspect in a Madison store until police could arrive Sunday.  Fifty-one-year-old Eric A. Eisenhauer was arrested at a Boost Mobile store while carrying a phone which had been stolen.  The female victim had been at Danny’s Pub early Sunday when she noticed her cell phone and debit card were missing.  When she confronted Eisenhauer, she was pushed to the ground, but several bystanders were able to hold the store’s door closed until police showed up.
