A Colorado Man is in custody in Dunn County after a rash of thefts. According to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, Deputies were investigating stolen vehicles from Bloomer, and Colfax on October 13th and 14th, when a Dunn County Deputy spotted the vehicle from Colfax on 670th Street near Hwy 170 in the town of Tainter. The vehicle was pulled over and the operator of the vehicle, 31yr old Christopher Barr of Colorado was linked to the stolen vehicle in Bloomer and arrested. It was also discovered that Barr had broken into the Synergy Gas Station and a Camper in Colfax on Oct 13. He is being held at the Dunn County Jail.
The City of Durand is looking at developing a forestry plan to harvest some of the trees on city property. One part of the plan would also help with the development of a dog park on property near Tarrant Park. Durand Mayor Patrick Milliren says the city would log off some of that property for the dog park while at the same time sell the lumber. The city is expected to have a finalized forestry plan in place by the end of the year.
Emergency response departments are a vital part of life in rural America when there are problems. Departments from Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin received over $600,000 to fund much-needed equipment and technology upgrades. Here in Western Wisconsin, the Elmwood, Lund and Nelson Fire Departments along with the Boyceville and Arcadia Ambulance Services received grants for equipment including radios, gas monitors, and chainsaws. Through its Fund for Rural America, Compeer Financial awarded 160 Emergency Response Equipment Grants to help volunteer fire, rescue, and ambulance departments improve their operational efficiency, safety, and response times.
A former staffer at a Fall Creek group home -- accused of having sex with a resident -- is pleading guilty to charges. Investigators say that Alicia Vogler engaged in sexual activity with a man who was living at the Palmer Place group home under a protective order. Authorities were called after several coworkers said the two were too close, and after managers say they found several sexually explicit text messages. Vogler has pleaded guilty to a single count of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of disorderly conduct.
An outside jury will be brought in to hear next year's trial of the defendant charged in the killing of ten-year-old Lily Peters. Investigators say that Peters was killed in Chippewa Falls on April 24th of 2022 with her body found the next day. Seventeen-year-old defendant Carson Peters-Berger was just 14 when prosecutors say he took the young girl's life. Jurors from outside of Chippewa County will be brought in to hear testimony and deliver a verdict in the trial scheduled to begin on November 2nd of next year.
An
arraignment hearing for an Eau Claire man charged with killing a
woman is being rescheduled. Shane Helmbrecht is charged with
intentional homicide in the fatal shooting of his neighbor Jenn Ward
in 2016. Helmbrecht was to have been arraigned yesterday but the
hearing has been moved to January of 2026.
A La Crosse businessman is pleading not guilty to charges stemming from an August vehicle crash. Don Weber faces charges including OWI and Carrying a Concealed Weapon without a permit after an accident in which La Crosse police say he hit two parked cars before his own vehicle overturned. Weber is the founder of Logistics Health Incorporated -- a company that provides health programs for the Defense Department.
At least three Wisconsin airports won’t be showing a video blaming Democrats for travel delays. That video featuring Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claims Democrats in Congress are responsible for the government shutdown and that any delays at T S A checkpoints are their fault. La Crosse, Dane and Milwaukee Airports and will not play Noem's video message, although it may still be shown at T S A checkpoints. Other airports across the country have refused to play the video as well, for violating regulations against political messaging.
Three
Rivers Community Action recently launched a new transportation
service designed to help residents travel between Wabasha,
Red Wing and Lake City.
This initiative was created in response to feedback from residents
highlighting the need for more accessible and reliable transportation
options.
Cost of the service is $5 per ride.
The
service will be offered on
Mondays only and run 3 times between Red Wing, Lake City and Wabasha.
A bill restricting student use of cellphones in Wisconsin’s K-12 public schools passes the state Senate. The Senate author, Appleton Republican Rachael Cabral-Guevera, said it’s a widely supported concept, citing a Marquette Poll which found 89% of Wisconsinites support banning cell phone use during classroom instructional time. She said the devices that are taking away from kids learning and lawmakers have been asked to do something about it. The bill requires school boards to enact policies restricting cell phone use during instructional time, with allowances for teachers to okay student use of their phones for educational purposes. A survey by the state Department of Public Instruction found most school districts already have policies in place. The bill has already passed the state Assembly and it’s unclear if Governor Tony Evers will sign the measure into law.
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is working to get back unemployment benefits to applicants following a federal court ruling. The Department announced Tuesday a recent order will allow people to get both unemployment benefits and social security disability payments. A 2013 law passed under then Governor Scott Walker prevented Wisconsinites from getting both benefits at the same time, but the August ruling found that to be unconstitutional under the Americans with Disabilities Act. D W D is reaching out to people who may be affected, including those who were denied unemployment because of disability benefits or had it terminated when they went onto benefits.
The Wausau Ethics Board is deciding whether Mayor Doug Diny broke the city's ethics code by taking an absentee ballot drop box last year. It follows testimony that the box was locked, the city attorney warned against interference, and Diny moved it to his office without approval. The board earlier found probable cause of an ethics violation but made no final ruling. Diny says he acted to protect election security and has asked for dismissal while alleging noncompliance by other officials. Meanwhile, a separate criminal review by the Marathon County District Attorney and Wisconsin DOJ is ongoing.
A Rochester woman is arrested after she was reportedly in possession of more than four pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop. Olmsted County Sheriff's authorities say Aguiel Bior was pulled over on Sunday near mile marker 223 on I-90. Emmanuel Oman of Austin was also taken into custody. Both suspects are held in custody on suspicion of first-degree controlled substance sales.
Minnesota officials are investigating five more companies connected to individuals recently indicted for allegedly stealing from the state's Medicaid program. The state's Department of Human Services confirmed the fraud probes. The information about the investigations surfaced weeks after the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minneapolis indicted eight individuals for allegedly defrauding the state's Housing Stabilization Services program. The names of the businesses being probed include Safe Haven Autism Center, Bayside Care, Hearth Home Services, ARMHS Reach, and 24hrs Homecare.
A church in Eau Claire is preparing for its seventh annual Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event. Volunteers at Peace Lutheran Church are packing about 124-thousand meals for children in countries including Haiti and Somalia. The church is looking for 550 volunteers for two-hour shifts to pack meals and load pallets. Volunteers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food for the local food bank, Feed My People. The event is set for October 24th and 25th.
