Local-Regional News Sept 11

The Mondovi City Council is meeting tonight.  Items on the agenda include an update on the goose hunting in the city, an update on the North Eau Claire Street Project and the police department will give a demonstration of the new squad car purchase.  Tonight's meeting begins at 5:30 at the Marten Center in Mondovi.

A Whitehall man has been charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child in Buffalo County.  According to the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department, the department received a report that 57yr old Ricardo Garcia-Garcia had sexually assaulted a daughter of his ex-wife between the years of 2013-2018 when they were married.

The average price of gas in Wisconsin is up but it's a different story in the southern part of the state.  Triple-A reports the statewide average price for regular jumped four cents on Saturday, to three-59 a gallon.  Meanwhile, the average price here in western Wisconsin jumped nearly 30 cents to $3.99 a gallon.  Some experts say the big jump should be short-lived as a refinery that serves the midwest unexpectedly went offline last week, but should be up and running this week and cheaper blends of winter gas will begin to hit the market by this Saturday.

The memorial for the western Wisconsin Girl Scouts run down five years ago is growing. Volunteers spent the weekend adding landscaping, benches, and a new walkway to the memorial in Lake Hallie. The memorial stands to remember the three Girl Scouts and one mom who were killed when a diver drove off the side of the road and ran them down back in 2018. The Green Oasis landscaping company did the work, which normally would have cost about three thousand-dollars, for free.

Housing advocates in Rochester are worrying about the rise in eviction rates. The Three Rivers Community Action says the demand in housing assistance from households facing eviction has been unexpectedly high. The non-profit organization serves Southeast Minnesota and it says it had to pause applications to give staff time to catch up. Eviction filings in Olmsted County are up 16 percent between January and June of this year compared to the same time frame last year. The Housing Justice Center President says eviction rates around the state have persistently stayed above pre-pandemic levels.

The U.S. Secretary of Education is praising a Rochester school, saying it should be a national model for its focus on supporting students beyond the classroom.  Education Secretary Miguel Cardona toured John Marshall High School on Friday as part of his Back to School Bus Tour.  He praised the school for focusing on the mental health of students, saying that ideal needs to be part of the foundation of education in every U.S. school.  Cardona told John Marshall administrators that the resources and support they offer to students go beyond anything he's seen during visits to schools in 43 other states.

It will be a somber day across Wisconsin as communities remember 9/11 today. There will be a number of ceremonies this morning, to remember the moment when the planes hit the World Trade Center 22 years ago today. There will also be a number of events later today and into this evening across the state.

A state Senate committee is scheduled to vote today on the status of Meagan Wolfe as administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission.  It remains unclear whether the full Senate will vote to remove Wolfe from office following today’s planned paper ballot. The elections commission voted 3-0 in June to renominate Wolfe for a second four year term. The three Democrats abstained, arguing four votes were needed to move forward on a nomination, and that meant Wolfe could stay in the position indefinitely. It’s expected that any effort to remove Wolfe from office would end up in a legal challenge.

One Wisconsin Republican is going on the record, promising not to vote to impeach the state's newest Supreme Court justice. State Rep. Scott Johnson on Friday said he will not vote to impeach Justice Janet Protasiewicz. Johnson says he thinks Protasiewicz should recuse herself from the pending arguments over redistricting in Wisconsin, but he says he will not vote to remove her. Johnson says the voters of the state just elected Protasiewicz in April, and he says elections have consequences.

Delta Air Lines is hosting their annual de-ice boot camp in Minneapolis.  Every summer, about four hundred Delta workers are brought to Minneapolis to learn how to de-ice planes.  The training is important as ice can form on the body and wings if left untreated, potentially interfering with the flight of the plane.  About 13-thousand planes had to be de-iced last winter in Minneapolis.

Two De Soto men have been arrested for a September 2nd incident in Vernon County.   The sheriff’s office there says after 911 received a call reporting a shooting at a rural De Soto residence, law enforcement found 61-year-old Kraig Hanson walking down a road.  Hanson told officers he was accidentally shot in The back of the head by his son, 38-year-old Kenneth Hanson.  After several unsuccessful attempts to establish phone contact with the son, a search warrant located a gun that wasn’t fired, but it was discovered that someone had been hit with the firearm itself. An investigation led to the arrest of Kenneth Hanson, who was released after posting bond. Kraig Hanson was also arrested and released on a signature bond.

Governor Tony Evers was at a Thursday night event spotlighting veterans’ mental health issues. The gathering at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center announced the distribution of $650,000 in grants from the American Rescue Plan Act to 16 different organizations.  The grants for the groups provide mental healthcare services ranging from psychiatry to horse therapy and are a part of the governor’s $10 million investment in veterans’ programs across Wisconsin.  Veterans are more susceptible to such ailments as suicidal ideation, PTSD, and depression than the general public is.

The chief clerk for the Wisconsin State Senate is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.   The Journal Sentinel reports that a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said he could not discuss the status of Michael Queensland. Wisconsin Public Radio reported that Queensland had his badge access to state buildings, including the Capitol, removed last month. The chief clerk is a nonpartisan office that oversees Senate administration and record-keeping and serves as the chamber's parliamentarian and chief operating officer. Queensland has held the post since being elected by the Senate in January 2021.

A Wisconsin man is arrested for actions during the January 6 riot in the U.S. Capitol.  Federal prosecutors say 40-year-old Joseph Cattani of Colgate was identified after surveillance images were released from the January 6 insurrection. Cattani is seen among the crowd of rioters at the Capitol, and later pulling a Capitol Police officer's face shield up and down as the officer's head twists and turns. Prosecutors allege Cattani then pushed his way into the building and spent about 20 minutes inside. Cattani was arrested Thursday on felony and misdemeanor charges.

Wisconsin can no longer use a national voter registration form. A judge earlier this week said the form asks for information not required by state law, while at the same time not asking for information required by state law. One of the issues is that the national form asks voters about their race. The judge's order only impacts voter registration going forward. No one who registered with the national form in the past will be removed from Wisconsin's voter rolls.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is hoping the drought affecting parts of the state will not have a big impact on this year's fall colors.  The agency has begun sharing updates on the change in leaf color across the state through its online Fall Color Finder.  D-N-R staffers update the page every Wednesday to enable Minnesotans to plan trips to find the most vibrant fall colors.  This week's color map shows leaves beginning to change slightly in the northwest and western parts of the state.  The peak of the fall color change is expected later this month and into mid-October.
